Greenwood completes first phase of Emerson Ave. project
Boulevard design includes landscaped medians and wireless traffic detection system

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The City of Greenwood has completed phase-one transformation for Emerson Ave., one of the city’s most traveled north-south corridors. In May, the Greenwood Redevelopment Commission (RDC) approved a $3.8 million construction contract, and phase one construction began later that month.

The 1.5-mile piece of revamped Emerson Ave. stretches from Main St. to County Line Rd. and includes raised center medians, the installation of wireless vehicular detectors to improve traffic flow at intersections, pavement reconstruction and more than 60 new trees.

The first phase of construction totaled $1.8 million. The second phase will begin next year and include decorative lighting, updated street signals and trail improvements.

Greenwood RDC President Brent Tilson says the public improvements set the stage for increased private investment along Emerson Ave.

“The Emerson Ave. improvements have already attracted increased interest from private businesses,” said Tilson. “Emerson will continue to be an important corridor for Greenwood, and this investment demonstrates our commitment to facilitate increased commercial activity.
