Greenwood continues infrastructure investments throughout downtown and southeast side
Latest updates include improved streetscapes, and eastern section of east west corridor
GREENWOOD, Ind. – The City of Greenwood continues to move forward on important infrastructure investments, using the summer construction season to transform streetscapes and roadways throughout the city. During its June meeting, the Greenwood Redevelopment Commission (RDC) approved a construction bid for the latest Worthsville Road improvements.
The project encompasses a .68 mile long, two-lane section of Worthsville Road, just east of I-65, starting at Collins Road and extending to Hurricane Creek. Construction estimates came in under initial estimates at $3.1 million and will further extend the east-west connector on Greenwood’s south side.
“Greenwood is literally transforming before our eyes,” said Mayor Mark W. Myers. “The progress on both the Worthsville Road project and downtown streetscapes provides both immediate and future benefits to our community and visitors. We’re creating better connectivity and walkability, and we’re making long term investments in our critical infrastructure.”
Beyond lane widening and stormwater improvements, the Worthsville Road project includes multiuse paths that will connect with an existing trail system to provide access to Grassy Creek Park and the C9 school campus. Construction is set to begin in spring 2019 and continue into the winter months.
During its meeting this week, the RDC heard an overview of plans to renovate downtown streetscapes along Madison Avenue and Main Street. The project includes decorative lighting and signage, a modernized traffic signal at Main and Madison and widened sidewalks, which have long been sought to increase walkability and pedestrian safety in the commercial historic district.
The project will also include subterranean improvements to stormwater and sanitary sewer systems, many of which were installed more than a century ago.
Final approval for the design contract (a collaboration between Rundell Ernstberger Associates and Strand Associates) will be considered at the August RDC meeting. Design is estimated to take six to nine months with construction to follow.
The new projects follow a number of others already in progress throughout the city:
- Madison Avenue street and pedestrian redevelopment
- Connector road through downtown from Surina Way to Market Plaza
- Main Street and Meridian Street intersection improvements
- Smith Valley Road and Madison Avenue roundabout
- Various trail additions and improvements to pedestrian connectivity
