Greenwood completes $2 million Madison Ave. phase one transformation
Project includes streetscape enhancements, decorative lighting, and multi-use trail
GREENWOOD, Ind. – The City of Greenwood has completed the first phase of its redevelopment of Madison Ave, one of the city’s major north-south corridors. In March, the Greenwood Redevelopment Commission (RDC) approved the project and invested over $2 million to begin phase one construction work. The project is a continuation of city efforts to revitalize downtown Greenwood, known locally as Old Town.
The initial phase of construction encompassed a portion of Madison Ave. close to downtown between Pearl and Noble Streets. The project includes a multi-use 12-foot wide trail for pedestrians and bicyclists, a landscaped bioswale, two brick pedestrian crosswalks, a pedestrian hybrid beacon signal at Euclid Avenue, decorative lightning and a revitalized public parking lot at Broadway and Madison.
“The new Madison Avenue provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy a more connected and walkable downtown,” said Mayor Mark W. Myers. “With the new updates, current businesses owners along the avenue will also benefit from increased pedestrian traffic. We’ve received a ton of positive feedback from retail and restaurant business owners and look forward to seeing their growth and continued success as we continue to revitalize Madison Ave. and Old Town Greenwood.”
Completion of the first phase provides significant connectivity for multiple downtown parking lots as well, providing residents and visitors the additional benefit of easier vehicle access to those traveling from further distances to the area. Construction began in April and was finished toward the end of last week.
