City of Greenwood awarding $1.5 million in federal grants from Community Development Block Grant Program, CARES Act
Local projects receive funding with new round of applications opening soon
GREENWOOD, Ind. – Since taking office in 2012, Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers has sought to maximize opportunities for federal funds to support local efforts. One such opportunity is the Community Development Block Grant Program managed by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Community Development Block Grants provide communities with resources to address a wide range of unique development needs. The goals of the program are to provide decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expand economic opportunities principally for low and moderate-income citizens.
Greenwood began participating in the program in 2019, receiving more than $1 million it is now distributing to local projects and organizations. Myers directed staff to combine this funding with the more than $500,000 Greenwood received as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
“We’re very proud of this program and want to help local organizations, businesses and residents as much as we can to offset challenges caused by the global pandemic,” said Myers. “The funding will support a number of exceptional efforts designed to serve our community. As a new round of applications begins, we look forward to considering additional programs.”
The list of efforts/organizations currently receiving funding includes:
- Gleaners Mobile Food Bank: $10,000
- Greenwood Community School Corporation: $177,904
- Ivy Tech Community College: $95,653
- Kids in Crisis (KIC-IT): $65,000
- Northeast Park Skate Park: $347,250
- Our Lady of the Greenwood Church: $30,000
- Saints Francis & Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church and School: $25,000
- The Social of Greenwood: $10,500
- United Way: $117,826
Greenwood prioritizes resident input on actions to accomplish program goals, collecting community data, holding public hearings and soliciting comments from residents. All data and feedback are housed on the city’s website.
