GREENWOOD, Ind. – The City of Greenwood, in partnership with the Greater Greenwood Arts Council, recently updated the Polk Hill Trail “Art on the Trail” exhibits by removing three exhibits and installing four new fixtures, which will remain in place until August 2023. In addition to these new art installations, Polk Hill Trail will receive new benches and trash receptacles in various locations.
The new art installations are already installed, and the trail upgrades will be made throughout the remainder of the summer.
“The Polk Hill Trail continues to improve year after year, and we are honored to have a platform for artists from around the nation to display their sculptures,” said Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers. “Their art adds an aesthetically appealing experience to our city’s network of trails, and the Polk Hill Trail is a prime example of beautification efforts that we want to continue throughout Greenwood.”
Following a national call for submissions, the new pieces were chosen earlier this summer by a juried panel comprised of local artists including members of the Greater Greenwood Arts Council, Southside Arts League, and Arts Council of Indianapolis, as well as a Greenwood Parks and Recreation Department staff member.
Submissions were evaluated and chosen based on the quality and professionalism of the work, durability in harsh weather conditions, appropriateness and relevance, compatibility with the site, design, function and adherence to submission requirements.
The recently installed sculptures include: “Triumph,” by Ben Pierce of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, “Sea-Saw,” by Robert Craig of Des Moines, Iowa, “Nature’s Quintet,” by Stephanie Sailer of Kingston, Illinois, and “Vase,” by Steven Maeck of Burr Oak, Iowa.
Of the removed art pieces, “Pod Stop,” by Greg Mueller, was generously donated to the city and will remain on display at a new location, to be announced in the near future.
“Between the new artwork and trail amenities, we are eager for Greenwood residents to experience these changes and create new memories within this section of the city’s trail network,” said Greenwood Parks and Recreation Director Rob Taggart.
