City of Greenwood Residential Historic District Clears Final Approval
U.S. Department of Interior approves Old Town Greenwood designation

GREENWOOD, Ind. – A residential neighborhood in downtown Greenwood has been officially designated on the National Register of Historic Places. The homes, some of which are more than 150 years old, are located northeast of Main Street and U.S. 31 and are on both sides of Madison Avenue.

The application for the designation was funded by a grant from the Department of the Interior through the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archeology. City officials partnered with local non-profit Restore Old Town Greenwood on the project.

“This designation is the result of a great public private partnership between City officials, Restore Old Town Greenwood, and state agencies,” said Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers. “Together we have created an environment that will foster a spirit of preservation and restoration in this important historic neighborhood.”

The designation will allow homeowners in the area to qualify for tax credits to pay for renovations and restorations of their homes. It does not limit homeowners’ ability to make changes to their properties or restrict how a particular property is used or sold.

Greenwood Planning Director Bill Peeples believes the designation could help spur investment in the area. “A historic residential district appeals to residents who appreciate a sense of place and tradition. The hope is that this designation will serve as a catalyst to encourage more people to move into and invest in improving the neighborhood.”

Senior Planner Ed Ferguson, who led the project, will receive the official certification of designation on behalf of the City at the annual Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony at the DNR Amphitheater on the Indiana State Fairgrounds at 12:30 p.m. on August 7, 2017. The event is open to the public, however, tickets are required.
