Indiana State Police plan expanded presence at Indy South Greenwood Airport
Aviation, Operations and Strategic Planning Sectons will be located in Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Nearing the completion stage of its new hangar at Indy South Greenwood Airport, the Indiana State Police (ISP) are finalizing operational preparations for the facility. In addition to the Aviation Section, ISP’s Strategic Planning Section and command staff for its Special Operations Section will be stationed at Indy South Greenwood.

In early 2019, ISP and the City of Greenwood finalized an agreement that included the new hangar – with office space – for various ISP sections and personnel. ISP and city officials broke ground on the hangar last June.

“A number of factors contributed to the decision to locate in Greenwood,” said Doug Carter, Superintendent of the Indiana State Police. “Top of the list is this is an ideal location with nearly all the infrastructure in place to meet our operational needs to serve not only state police aviation needs, but the needs of our law enforcement partners across the state.” Carter concluded, “Each section is looking forward to the new home and believe this is the beginning of a strong and enduring partnership with Greenwood and the airport.”

The Aviation Section currently operates with six pilots, two Tactical Flight Officers, and two part-time Tactical Flight Officers, for a total of ten personnel. Special Operations Section command staff consists of a Major (Commander), Captain and two Lieutenants. The Strategic Planning Section has four total staff members. ISP plans to add administrative positions at the location as well.

“Indy South Greenwood Airport continues its impressive growth and has become a significant driver of economic development in both Greenwood and Johnson County,” said Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers. “We are happy to offer the Indiana State Police a convenient location for such a critically important component of Hoosier law enforcement.”

Construction of the new hangar is expected to be completed in early spring. ISP plans to move personnel and the aviation fleet – and begin operations in Greenwood – soon after completion.

Indy South Greenwood Airport welcomes and services both local and transient aircraft, jets, pistons and turbines. It hosts two flight schools, aircraft rental services and two aircraft maintenance facilities, providing 24-hour customer service.
